The Savoy cross is a symbolic and regional cross, located in the Northern Alps.
Savoie is a former province and duchy, ceded to France in 1860 in exchange for military aid against the Austrian Empire during the Second Italian War of Independence.
Today, it is part of the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, comprising two departments: Savoie and Haute-Savoie.
The Savoy cross is very much in evidence in heraldry, and is a distinctive feature of the Savoy flag. But it can also be found on the coats of arms of many institutions, especially sporting ones.
While white symbolizes peace, purity and innocence, red evokes blood.
