What is a sailor's cap?

The sailor's cap is, as its name suggests, inspired by the sea wolves we imagine, on their boat with a pipe in their mouths... If they wear it, it's for a reason! A sailor's cap is a type of headgear traditionally worn by sailors and members of the naval army. These caps are generally made of wool or cotton and have a short, rounded peak. Sailor's caps are often adorned with the insignia or logo of the naval unit to which the wearer belongs.

The shape is ideal for both men and women: a little puffy on top of the head, it caps both large and smaller heads. As for its visor, it's a little shorter than a usual cap, making it easy to wear.

When to wear the sailor cap? For men and women

The sailor's cap is traditionally worn as headgear to protect against the elements and the sun. It is worn by men and now also very much by women. This cap is often associated with casual outfits and nautical events. Sailor caps are also popular as a casual accessory to complete an outfit.

About the history of the Sailor Cap

If you don't know the history of the sailor cap, here's a short summary. This piece was once reserved for the army, indeed this headgear was an integral part of their military uniform. At the time, for naval officers, the bicorne was the accessory of choice. Imposing and impractical, this hat soon gave way to the lighter but equally warm and comfortable sailor cap.

Prepared to withstand the climatic conditions that sailors may encounter, be it sun, wind or rain, these items have a solid reputation as quality headwear.
Declined in numerous models and made from different raw materials and fabrics, from pea coats to linen or cotton, jersey, sailor caps will adapt to your environment and bring that touch of originality that will go everywhere, while protecting your head summer and winter alike. Nowadays, you don't have to be a soldier to wear one, and its use is no longer reserved for that audience alone!

How is a sailor's cap made?

The genuine sailor's cap is basically made of woollen cloth and manufactured in France, it was once an integral part of sailors' attire. Its history is directly linked to this army corps. Often available with a short visor, this piece subsequently became a leading accessory for both men and women from working-class backgrounds to film circles like French actress Catherine Deneuve.

Originally worn with traditional military uniforms (France, Great Britain, USA...), today it can be worn with very feminine pieces such as a dress. Either way, it's an accessory that's sure to dress up your head in any circumstance.

How to wear a sailor cap?

At its size to begin with, this goes without saying, and is the first point to consider. A sailor's cap that's too big will fall ungracefully over your eyebrows. Too small, and the visor's demarcation will leave an undesirable mark on your forehead and won't elongate your silhouette. So choose the right size for you (see our little guide to size selection).

Then, nothing could be simpler, choose the style and color. The sailor cap remains a very easy accessory to wear, whether with a chic or casual outfit, it goes with everything and is equally suitable for men and women! With jeans, a warm wool sweater and a long coat: you're ready for winter. And for the summer season, it'll be perfect with a pretty little flowery dress or Bermuda shorts and t-shirt for gentlemen, of course!

For women, you can leave your hair loose or do a slightly more structured hairstyle like with a low chignon or side braids. All that's left to do is slip on your cap for a cool day.

You can opt for a replica of the real sailor's caps, white or blue with decorative braids or even the captain's cap for the more daring. But if you want a less flashy, more classic style, choose a fabric or cotton model that remains neutral in color and pattern. Embroidered or not, with matching trim, the choice is yours!

There are many models to be worn with both a feminine and masculine look. Like the gavroche, the sailor's cap is a piece that brings that touch of elegance and originality that will make all the character of a stylish outfit. Finally, to wear it nicely in summer, prefer light, comfortable materials like cotton or linen, for example.

How to clean a sailor's cap?

After wearing the cap, especially if you wear it daily, it may then be necessary to clean it. We recommend that you clean your cap as often as possible to prevent dirt or stains from becoming completely embedded.

After a few uses of your headwear, we recommend that you take a white cloth and soak it in a mixture of cold water and a few drops of ammonia. With this cloth you go around the inside of your cap where perspiration settles in order to remove it and prevent it from settling in the fabric.

If your cap needs a more thorough cleaning, it's advisable to soak the cap in a basin filled with cold water with a few drops of ammonia to thoroughly remove perspiration. It's best to hand-wash in cold water with ammonia. This not only removes perspiration well, but also brings the colors back.

  • To do this, take a pan filled with cold water and add a mignonette of ammonia. You can perform this operation twice in case the cap is very dirty.

  • You then leave the cap soak for a few minutes. If perspiration is heavy, use a small brush to remove impurities.

  • Then, you iron the cap in a pan of cold water without ammonia.

  • Finally, you drain it with a terry cloth and leave it to dry at room temperature and definitely not in a too-hot environment. Let your headpiece dry flat, well stuffed with white tissue paper, so that it retains its shape.

Another technique, the use of the dishwasher:

  • Place the cap on top, alone, level with the glasses, then activate the machine with cold water. This point is very important, both for wool, cotton or Alcantara caps, as otherwise the coarse grain inside will shrink.

  • Take it out. Don't twist it to drain it, but blot the cap in a terry towel then leave to air dry.

  • If you'd rather leave it to the experts, don't panic! You can also visit your favorite milliner and ask him to clean your headgear - he'll know how to help.
