A fashionable summer hat in the 19th century, the Canotier is a straw hat with a narrow brim. Initially a rather masculine hat, as evidenced by Auguste Renoir's painting "Le déjeuner des canotiers", women soon began to wear them. Gabrielle Chanel, better known as Coco Chanel , was a prime example, andits success was democratized by French artists Maurice Chevalier and Fred Astaire in the1900s. Today, the boater has become the perfect summer accessory.
